Privacy Policy — Reading Adventure Coach
Last updated: 6 September 2026
Reading Adventure Coach is an app for children aged 5–8 who are learning to read aloud. Because our users are children, we built the app so that there is as little to say in this policy as possible.
The short version
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information about you or your child. There are no accounts, no sign-up, no advertising, no analytics, no tracking, and no third-party services collecting data through this app. Everything your child does stays on your device. There is one optional one-time purchase, handled entirely by the App Store or Google Play - we never see your payment details.
What the app stores, and where
The app saves a small amount of information on the device only:
- the reader names you create (for example "Mia"),
- reading progress: stories finished, stars earned, minutes read,
- your settings: chosen language, any daily reading-time limit, and whether online recognition is on,
- whether the one-time unlock has been purchased - a single yes/no flag, with no payment details of any kind.
This never leaves the device. It is not sent to us, it is not backed up to any cloud service (we have deliberately disabled cloud backup of app data on Android), and it is not shared with anyone. Deleting the app deletes all of it permanently.
The microphone
Your child reads stories out loud, so the app asks for permission to use the microphone. Here is exactly what happens to that audio:
- The microphone is used only while a story is open on screen. The app has no background service and stops listening as soon as you leave the reading screen, switch apps, or take a call.
- Speech is turned into text so the app can follow along with the words on the page. By default this happens entirely on your device, using the speech recognition built into your phone or tablet.
- The app never records, saves, or uploads audio. No recording of your child's voice is created, kept, or sent anywhere by us. The recognised text is used only to highlight words on the current page and is discarded when the page turns.
- If your device has no on-device speech recognition for your language, the app simply switches to "Tap the words" mode. It never sends audio somewhere else instead.
The optional online recognition setting
In the Grown-ups' corner there is a setting called Allow online recognition, which is off by default.
If a grown-up turns it on, your device's own speech recogniser may send audio to Apple or Google to be transcribed, which can be more accurate for some languages. In that case the audio is handled by Apple or Google under their privacy policies, not ours — we still never receive, store, or see it. You can turn this setting off again at any time, and leaving it off means your child's voice never leaves the device.
The in-app purchase
Most of the app is free. There is one optional purchase: a single one-time unlock that adds the remaining two lands and their twenty stories. It is not a subscription, there is nothing to cancel, and it is never charged again.
We never see or handle your payment details. The purchase is carried out entirely by Apple's App Store or Google Play, under their own privacy policies and with their own payment systems. Your card number, billing address, and store account are known to them, never to us. We receive no payment information, and we have no server for any of it to be sent to.
All the app keeps is a single yes/no flag on the device recording that the unlock was bought, so the extra lands are there next time. Restoring a purchase on a new device asks the store, not us - the store recognises your account, and again we see nothing about it.
The purchase can only be reached from the Grown-ups' corner, behind the parental gate. Nothing in the part of the app a child uses asks them to buy anything, or to ask you to.
What the app does not do
- No user accounts, logins, or profiles stored anywhere but your device.
- No advertising of any kind, and no ad networks.
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or usage tracking.
- No social features, chat, messaging, or user-generated content.
- No subscriptions, and no repeat charges of any kind.
- No links out to websites from anywhere a child can reach. The only link out of the app (to your device's system settings) sits behind a parental gate.
- No selling or sharing of personal information. There is none to sell.
Children's privacy
This app is intended for children and is designed to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States, the UK Age Appropriate Design Code, and the GDPR's protections for children (including Article 8) in the EU and UK.
Because we collect no personal data from anyone, there is no data for a parent to review, correct, export, or ask us to delete. If you wish to remove everything the app has stored, delete the app, or use the "Remove reader" action in the Grown-ups' corner.
Permissions we request
| Permission | Why | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | To hear your child read aloud and follow along on the page | Optional — declining switches to "Tap the words" mode, and every story still works |
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top and publish the new version at this address before the change takes effect. Material changes affecting how the microphone is used will also be described in the app's release notes.
